8 proposals for more Greek patents

Eight proposals for stimulating the production of patents in Greece and for the development of innovations from the stage of basic research in applied research until and including the marketing of a commercial product, were highlighted in the context of the 2nd Innovation Forum, entitled “Innovation leads developments”, which took place on 24.11.2021, and was co-organized by the Hellenic-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Athens.

The panel was coordinated by Mr. Gregory Pelecanos, Lawyer-Partner of the Law Firm “BALLAS, PELECANOS & Associates L.P.C.”, as well as Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Hellenic-German Chamber. Participants in said panel were also Mr. Stefanos Tsimikalis, Lawyer-Partner of Law Firm “TSIMIKALIS-KALONAROU”, Mr. Michalis Boutaris, Founder and CEO of the investment organization «ATHROA INNOVATIONS» as well as Dr. Dimitris Kouzelis, European Patent Attorney, CEO of INTELLEX, Chairman of the Intellectual Property Committee of ICC Hellas, Business Consultant and former Director of the European Patent Office.

More specifically, the members of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Hellenic-German Chamber, expressing their position in the parallel workshop entitled “The relation between Intellectual Property and Innovation in practice – Proposals for institutional improvements”, suggested in particular, inter alia, the following:

  • Linking patent production with academic advancement in the Higher Education Institutions
  • Reinforcement of education in relation to the importance of Intellectual Property
  • The change in business culture targeting at increased familiarization with the concept of risk
  • Ensuring increased transparency in patent funding procedures
  • The establishment of the institution of patent attorneys as consultants
  • Addressing organizational and institutional shortages, as well as removing certain cultural counter-incentives
  • Strengthening the cooperation between research institutes and universities, as well as the industry
  • Facilitating private funding by the Greek industry towards public academic institutions, through scholarships and spin-offs.
