A total of 392 Land Registries across Greece have been closed, marking a historic transition so the modern digital National Cadastre. With the abolition of the Land Registries, all responsibilities and procedures related to the transfer and management of real estate have now been fully transferred to the Cadastral Offices.
The introduction of the digital National Cadastre has significantly improved access to real estate data, enabling lawyers, notaries, engineers, and citizens to obtain detailed information on property ownership and titles through a secure, user-friendly online platform.
The digital National Cadastre has significantly simplified procedures that previously necessitated multiple in-person visits to the Land Registries, facilitating the electronic and remote execution of these processes. Furthermore, its introduction enhances legal certainty by minimizing errors and mitigating potential disputes, as it provides accurate, up-to-date, and transparent property records, thereby strengthening confidence in real estate transactions.
Moreover, the cadastral system is now fully integrated with tax authorities, urban planning agencies, and other governmental databases, promoting seamless interconnectivity and improving regulatory oversight within the real estate sector.
Last, significant progress has been made in the cadastral mapping of real estate assets across Greece, with completion currently at 60% and full implementation expected by the end of 2025. Additionally, the digitization of the Land Registry archives, comprising approximately 600 million pages, is progressing, with 45% already completed, equating to 280 million digitized pages. Upon completion of this digitization process, Greek lawyers will benefit from a modern, efficient, and secure remote access system to archival records, thereby eliminating the necessity for physical presence at any Land Registry.
